What usually causes it
Fridge not cooling, freezer still cold
Usually airflow between the freezer and the fridge section is blocked: a frozen-over evaporator coil, a failed defrost heater or timer, or a stopped evaporator fan. Food packed against the vents can do it too.
Both sections warm
Often a dirty condenser coil, a stopped condenser fan, a failed start relay, or a problem with the compressor or control board. If you hear clicking every few minutes but no hum, the start relay is a likely suspect.
Water on the floor
A clogged or frozen defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, or a leaking water line to the ice maker or dispenser.
Ice maker stopped
A frozen fill tube, a clogged water filter, a failed water inlet valve, or the ice maker module itself.
Loud buzzing or rattling
Fan blades hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor working too hard because the coils are dirty.
Around here
In the western suburbs a lot of second refrigerators and chest freezers live in the garage or an unheated basement. When the garage drops below about 40°F in winter, many standard refrigerators stop running the compressor because the fridge section already feels cold, and the freezer side slowly thaws. That is not a broken refrigerator, but it looks exactly like one. We will tell you which it is on the phone before anyone drives over.
Compressor or refrigerant problem?
We are EPA 608 certified and handle sealed-system repair in-house: compressor replacement, leak repair, drier replacement and recharge. How it works →
Before the technician arrives
- Check that the temperature control wasn't bumped to a warmer setting.
- Make sure nothing blocks the vents inside the freezer and fridge.
- Keep the doors closed as much as possible. A full, closed freezer stays frozen for many hours.
- Move perishable food to a cooler with ice if the fridge is above 40°F.
Repair or replace?
A refrigerator typically lasts 10 to 15 years; built-in models often last longer and are usually worth repairing. Fans, relays, defrost parts, thermistors and water valves are relatively affordable repairs. A failed sealed system on an older freestanding fridge is the case where replacing often makes more sense.
Keep it running longer
- Vacuum the condenser coils once or twice a year.
- Replace the water filter about every six months.
- Keep door gaskets clean so they seal tightly.
- Leave a few inches of space behind the fridge for airflow.

| LG | Er dH | Defrost failure | Defrost heater, defrost sensor, control |
| LG | Er FS / Er rS | Freezer / fridge temperature sensor | Sensor, wiring |

Refrigerator repair questions
How long can food stay safe if my fridge stops cooling?
Food in a closed refrigerator generally stays safe for about 4 hours. A full closed freezer holds temperature for roughly 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24.
Why is my fridge running all the time?
Dirty condenser coils, a worn door gasket, or a failing fan are the usual reasons. It's worth fixing early, since constant running wears out the compressor.
Do you repair built-in and counter-depth refrigerators?
Yes. We work on built-in, French door, side-by-side, top- and bottom-freezer models.
Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?
The water itself usually isn't, but it can damage floors and cabinets. Turn off the water supply to the fridge if the leak is from the water line, and call us.
