What usually causes it

Oven won't heat

On electric ovens: a burned-out bake or broil element. On gas ovens: a weak igniter, which is the most common gas oven repair.

Wrong temperature

A failing temperature sensor, a faulty thermostat, or a door gasket that no longer seals.

Slow preheat

A weak igniter on gas ovens or one element not working on electric ovens.

Self-clean problems

A stuck door lock, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed control board.

Display errors or dead controls

A control board or sensor fault, sometimes after a power surge.

Around here

Wall ovens, double ovens, range ovens and cooktops, gas and electric. Holidays are when ovens get pushed hardest, so if yours has been slow to preheat or running off temperature, it is worth a look before Thanksgiving rather than on the day.

Before the technician arrives

  • Check whether the oven lock or Sabbath mode is on.
  • Use an oven thermometer to see how far off the temperature is.
  • Look at the bake element: visible breaks or blisters mean it's burned out.
  • Avoid running self-clean on an oven that already has problems.

Repair or replace?

Wall ovens and range ovens usually last 13 to 15 years. Elements, igniters, sensors and door gaskets are straightforward repairs. For built-in wall ovens, repair is almost always cheaper than replacing and re-fitting cabinetry.

Keep it running longer

  • Clean spills after the oven cools to prevent smoke and damage.
  • Don't cover the oven floor with foil.
  • Check the door gasket for tears.
  • Use self-clean sparingly; it's hard on parts.

Oven & Cooktop repair questions

Why does my gas oven take so long to heat?

The igniter weakens with age. It still glows but not hot enough to open the gas valve quickly. Replacing it usually solves the problem.

Do you repair wall ovens and double ovens?

Yes, single and double wall ovens, range ovens, and cooktops.

My oven is 25 degrees off. Can it be fixed?

Often it can be recalibrated in the settings. If the sensor is failing, we replace it.

Is it safe to use an oven with a cracked glass door?

No. The glass can shatter from heat. Stop using it until the glass is replaced.
