Ice maker not making ice

An ice maker that stopped is one of the most common refrigerator calls. Often the cause is simple; here is what to check first.

Check these first

  • Is the ice maker turned on? Many have a switch or a wire arm that turns it off when it is raised.
  • Freezer temperature. It should be around 0°F. Above about 10°F, many ice makers will not cycle.
  • Water filter. A clogged or old filter slows the water to a trickle. Replace it about every six months.
  • Water supply. Make sure the valve behind the refrigerator is fully open and the line is not kinked.

Common causes we find

  • A frozen fill tube, often caused by low water pressure or a leaking water valve.
  • A failing water inlet valve.
  • Ice jammed in the mold or the bin auger.
  • On French-door models with the ice maker in the door, a failing icing fan or a door seal letting warm air in.
  • A failed ice maker module.

When to call

If the ice maker is on, the freezer is cold and water reaches the refrigerator but no ice is made, it is time for a technician. Send us the brand and model number, and we can usually tell you what it will take.
