Safety first
If you smell a strong gas odor, turn the burners off, do not use switches or flames, leave the house and call Nicor Gas or 911. The steps below are only for a burner that clicks and does not light.
What to check
- Is the cap seated? The burner cap must sit flat and centered on the burner base. A crooked cap is the most common reason a burner will not light.
- Is it wet? After a spill or cleaning, let the burner dry completely, or dry it carefully with a hair dryer on low.
- Are the ports clogged? Clean the small holes around the burner head with a straight pin, not a toothpick, which can break off.
- Is the igniter clean? Wipe the small white ceramic igniter gently.
If it keeps clicking after the burner is off
Constant clicking usually means moisture in a burner switch or a failing spark module. On pro-style ranges like Wolf this is a common and fixable repair.
When to call
If the burner is clean, dry and the cap is seated, but there is no spark or the flame will not catch, the igniter, switch or spark module needs to be replaced.
Questions
Why does only one burner not light?
Usually that burner's cap, ports or igniter. If all burners fail to spark, it is more likely the spark module.
Is a clicking burner dangerous?
Clicking itself is not dangerous, but do not let gas flow for long without ignition. Turn it off and call.
